Ju-san no kata

Start Position: Stand in left Kamae, holding the Jo vertically in the left hand (at the top), with your thumb covering the end of the Jo.

  1. Raise the bottom end of the Jo up backwards, so that it raises into your right hand. Then Tsuki Chudan moving slightly off line to the left.
  2. Slide back & to the right into an upper block and then turn the Jo around in your right hand, and make Shomen Uchi, stepping forward with the right foot (all one count).
  3. Slide back & to the left making an upper block (right foot forward).
  4. Slide forward with Tsuki Chudan.
  5. Move the right hand forward until it is 1/3 from the end. Step forward with the left and Tenkan on it, turning the Jo in a 1/2 figure 8 & finish with the Jo on your right shoulder – Hasso Jodan
  6. Step forward with your right foot cutting Shomen Uchi.
  7. Tenkan & bring the Jo to protect the left side of the head as if to block Yokomen Uchi.
  8. Tsuki chudan forward (sliding forward).
  9. Tsuki backward, aiming for the knee.
  10. Step forward with the left foot protecting the right side of the head as if to block Yokomen Uchi.
  11. Raise the Jo up parallel to the ground and Tsuki Jodan.
  12. Let go with the right hand, turn the Jo over with your left hand, slide back taking the Jo with the right hand again and drop the jo sharpely, protecting against a Tsuki to the knee.
  13. Tsuki forward sliding the left foot forward and Kiai!

San-ju ichi no kata

Start Position: Stand in left Kamae, holding the Jo vertically in the left hand, approximately one foot down from the top (thumb up). Take hold with the right hand at the top in a reverse hold (thumb down). The bottom end of the Jo is placed on the mat in front of the left foot.

  1. Pivot the Jo about your left hand to aim a strike at the temple.
  2. Slide back & to the right into an upper block.
  3. Slide forward with Tsuki Chudan.
  4. Slide back & to the right into an upper block.
  5. Step forward with the right foot making a right Yokomen Uchi.
  6. Step forward with the left foot making a left Yokomen Uchi.
  7. Turn through 180° with the hips and torso (feet stay, but turn on the balls of the feet) to right Kamae making a right Yokomen Uchi.
  8. Step forward with the left foot making a left Yokomen Uchi.
  9. Bring the Jo to the left shoulder, then tenkan 180° bringing the Jo around to the right hip to strike at the legs behind you. You should be still in left Kamae.
  10. Step forward making an upper block (right foot forward).
  11. Step forward with the left foot making gyakuYokomen Uchi, that is, left hand back and right hand forward.
  12. Keeping the left foot forward, slide back, bring your right hand to the back end of the Jo, and your left hand to the center, dropping the jo sharply to block and protect your shin.
  13. Tsuki chudan sliding the left foot forward.
  14. Slide back & to the right into an upper block.
  15. Turn the Jo around in your right hand, and make Yokomen Uchi, stepping forward with the right foot.
  16. Tsuki backward on the left side, aiming for the knee.
  17. Step forward with the left foot and, using the power of the left hip, strike at the legs.
  18. Turn the Jo over in the left hand and dropping block
  19. Tsuki to the knee, left foot forward
  20. Turn the Jo around in your right hand, and make Yokomen Uchi, stepping forward with the right foot, and going down on to the left knee (kneeling – right knee up, left knee down).
  21. Tsuki back, aiming for the knee (remain kneeling).
  22. Stand up and slide back & to the right into an upper block (left Kamae).
  23. Holding the Jo parallel to the ground make Tsuki Jodan.
  24. turning the jo over, make dropping block
  25. Tsuki chudan.
  26. Tsuki Jodan
  27. Tsuki backward on right side, aiming for the knee.
  28. Step forward with the right foot and, using the power of the right hip, strike at the legs.
  29. Slide back & to the right making a dropping block (right foot forward).
  30. Turn the Jo over in the right hand and Tsuki chudan
  31. Step forward with the left foot and make Yokomenuchi and Kiai!
